As electric vehicles (EVs) continue to surge in popularity, access to reliable charging infrastructure remains a critical factor for mass adoption. In a great move, Ford has announced that its F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E customers can now charge at Tesla's vast Supercharger network across the United States and Canada.
Pioneering Partnership with Tesla
This partnership marks the first time a non-Tesla automaker has gained access to Tesla's proprietary charging stations, opening up over 15,000 new fast-charging options for Ford EV drivers. According to a recent Cox Automotive study, the lack of charging stations is the second biggest barrier to EV purchases after upfront costs. By expanding charging accessibility, Ford is removing a significant hurdle and empowering more consumers to confidently make the switch to electric.
The addition of Tesla's Superchargers more than doubles the number of fast chargers available on Ford's BlueOval Charge Network, now boasting over 28,000 DC fast charging points among its 126,000+ total charging stations. This unparalleled expansion provides Ford EV owners with unrivaled charging convenience and flexibility, whether navigating long road trips or running daily errands.
Complimentary Fast Charging Adapter Offer
To access the new Supercharger network, Ford is offering its customers a complimentary Fast Charging Adapter until June 30, 2024. New and existing F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E owners enrolled in the BlueOval Charge Network can reserve their free adapter at Ford.com/FastChargingAdapter. Future Ford EVs will incorporate the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector, eliminating the need for an adapter.
Seamless integration is a key benefit of this partnership. With the FordPass and Charge Assist apps, customers can locate chargers, including Superchargers, and benefit from Plug & Charge capabilities, allowing charging to start automatically without the need for credit cards or additional apps. Routing integration for Superchargers is also coming in a future over-the-air update.
"Ford EV customers now have access to more than 15,000 Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada, more than doubling fast charging options on the BlueOval Charge Network," said Jim Farley, Ford's CEO. "This move improves the public charging experience by giving our customers even more choice and is a vital part of our growth as an EV brand."
While many Ford EV owners charge at home, this partnership ensures they have a comprehensive charging ecosystem for all their needs. Ford also provides tips for optimizing charging efficiency, such as preconditioning the vehicle, setting departure times, and reducing HVAC energy use.
With this positive step, Ford demonstrates its promise to deliver a seamless, convenient charging experience for its EV customers. As the shift towards electrification accelerates, initiatives like these will be crucial in driving widespread adoption and making EVs a viable choice for more consumers.
